Enjoy Our Nearby Attractions

At Oak Haven Resort & Campground, we are proud of our comfortable accommodations, extensive amenities, and on-site activities. However, if you want to explore more during your vacation, there are plenty of nearby attractions to consider.

Itasca State Park

This is a beautiful park, especially for fishermen in the spring. In May, you can fish for walleye, northern pike, bass, and panfish here. Throughout the park, everything is in full bloom with a vast array of wildflowers at this time of year. Birding is very popular in the spring as varying species return to Minnesota after migration.

As part of the park, Lake Itasca is a popular location for summer activities in Minnesota. Fishing, canoeing, boating, and kayaking equipment are always accessible. On-land recreation consists of biking via the Heartland Trail, horseback riding, and hiking. A 9.6-mile section of the North Country National Scenic Trail passes through the park’s southern tier.

Chippewa National Forest

The Chippewa National Forest, located in the heart of northern Minnesota, is a celebration of seasons, culture, and environment.

The Chippewa National Forest was the first national forest established east of the Mississippi River in 1908. It is home to more lakes and wetlands than any other national forest. The forest was originally known as the Minnesota National Forest.

The name was changed in 1928 to honor the original inhabitants. Today, the forest and Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe are both accessible and offer visitors a chance to experience Anishinabe culture. Learn about the past from prehistory to the early logging era and Civilian Conservation Corps days.

Mississippi Headwaters

The mighty Mississippi River begins its winding journey to the Gulf of Mexico as a mere 18-foot wide knee-deep river in Itasca State Park. From here, the river flows north to Bemidji, MN, where it turns east and then south near Grand Rapids, MN. It flows a total of 694 miles before working its way out of state and down the countryside.

Within the park, people enjoy walking or floating on inner tubes for the first half mile of the river, which meanders at a slow 1.2 miles per hour during the warm summer months. In the winter, you can still see the water flowing over the rocks, as warmer spring water keeps the area ice-free.

Taking your picture next to the iconic headwaters post is a must when you visit the park! The historic marker dates back to the 1930s and indicates the Mississippi River’s total mileage at 2,552 miles. Since then, the river’s course has been shortened and altered by flooding and channeling. Every summer, some brave canoeists leave Lake Itasca to begin their river adventures with hopes of reaching the Gulf of Mexico over 2,318 miles away.

The Lost Forty

Within the surrounding forest, you can visit an area known as the Lost Forty. This area, which has a total of 144 acres, was accidentally mapped as part of Coddington Lake when the original maps of the region were laid out in 1882. As a result of the mapping error, the Lost Forty was never logged.

It contains some of the oldest forests in the state, with some trees more than 350 years old. Less than 2% of Minnesota’s total forested land today is this old. These unique qualities offer an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities throughout the year.

Cedar Lakes Casino

Cedar Lakes Casino & Hotel features a gaming floor with 650 slot machines and a centrally located feature bar. Those who come to play can stay in one of the 100 guest rooms and relax in the indoor swimming pool or whirlpool.

The Cedar Lakes Casino & Hotel is also able to accommodate events in its ballroom. The ballroom can fit 250 banquet seats, and the space can be divided into smaller meeting spaces. A variety of food and drink are available with a three-venue food court, restaurant and brew pub, and the casino center bar. You’ll be sure to have your appetite satisfied and your thirst quenched.

Bemidji, MN

No visit to Bemidji is complete without a visit to the Tourist Information Center located on the shores of Lake Bemidji. Here stand the famous statues of Paul and Babe. These statues were constructed in 1937 to portray the legendary lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his pet ox, Babe the Blue Ox.

Also, the Bemidji Sculpture Walk starts at the Tourist Information Center and is a must for visitors and residents to enjoy. A short walk to the north takes you to the Historic Carnegie Library, which was built in 1910. Right now, there is a major fundraiser going on to get enough funds to restore and repurpose this beautiful building.
